Essays can help students secure scholarship funding

Your college admission essay is one of the most important aspects of your whole college application. Not only can it impact whether or not you get into a school, but some students may find that their essays could help them secure additional scholarships.

Minnesota high school seniors could win as much as $1,600 towards college costs as part of the Reuben Youngerberg Memorial Biodiesel Scholarship initiative. Students must complete an essay focusing on biodiesel as an alternative fuel source for their chance to win the scholarship.

The contest is just one initiative that aims to reward prospective college students for their interest in agriculture and alternative fuels. According to The Californian, 20 high schools girls from the North Monterey County Unified School District won scholarships totaling more than $20,000 to pursue a college education focusing on agriculture.

Many students dismiss scholarships when they're filling out college applications. Talk to your financial aid counsellor and your college admissions department to find out whether sources of funding such as these are available to students in your major. College can be expensive, and scholarships can go a long way in making your degree more affordable.
