What do college admissions officers expect from potential applicants?

What do colleges look for in potential applicants? According to a recent survey that was published by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), strong academic performance is one of the best ways to make your college application stand out.

The report states that the single most important factor in many universities' admissions process is the grades achieved by applicants on college preparatory courses. The curriculum of your high school is also considered by many colleges, in addition to your standardized test scores and your overall GPA.

Other factors that college admissions officials consider important are the strength of your college application essay, and how much interest you show in attending that particular university. Although it's becoming less important today than it was in the past, some schools still look at your class rank, as well as letters of recommendation and any extracurricular activities you may be involved in.

Although the competition is fierce, don't be discouraged. According to the NACAC report, four-year colleges accepted more than two-thirds of all college applicants on average in 2010. Study hard and stay focused on your academic goals.
